YouTube became the world’s second-largest search engine after Google with over 1 billion active users and 300 hours of video content uploaded every minute. Moreover, top gaming YouTubers and channels are capturing the attention of millions by using different formats of gaming content. The number of loyal followers is rising steadily.

Because of the huge success, YouTube has even developed its own gaming platform which is called “YouTube Gaming”. It presents “live-content” which includes real-time interaction between the YouTuber and the viewer. In addition, the video content is categorized in “Let´s Plays”, walkthroughs, machinima and reviews.

Let´s Plays

A “Let’s Play” is a series of videos documenting the gameplay of a video game, usually including commentary by the gamer. The difference to a walkthrough is the focus on an individual’s subjective experience with the game, often with humorous or critical commentary from the gamer. With over 50 million followers on YouTube, PewDiePie is the most famous “Let´s Play Gamer”. Therefore, he was announced in the TIME’s list of the 30 Most Influential People on the Internet which is not surprising.



Video game walkthroughs will guide the video game player throughout a game or a certain part of a game by giving written or spoken descriptive instructions. Additionally, viewers receive information about „hidden secrets” to improve their skills. A good example is FudgeMuppet with nearly 0.5 million followers. FudgeMuppet focuses on Fallout 4 and Skyrim, two very famous role playing games.



This type of YouTube gaming video is a combination of the words “machine” and “cinema” and is known as the most creative one. Creators use gaming characters and themes to create a new form of entertaining computer graphic art. Viewers love the mixture of content that is provided as well as discussing about it in the community. Watch a fight between Son Goku and Superman created by „Screwattack“ (over 3.4 million followers) to get an impression of what machinima is about. 



Often gamers are looking for a review video on YouTube before they make the decision to buy a new game. On the one hand, viewers watch the videos to get an idea what to expect of a new game. On the other hand, it is also about entertainment because YouTubers add subjective opinions which includes funny moments. One famous Channel is “AngryJoeShow” with over 2.7 million followers. He is known for his unique style of being informative and hilarious at the same time.


The variety of formats highlights the depth of the gaming community. Gaming is also a way to connect to other people with a similar mindset to share experiences. On YouTube Gaming you can get connected to a lifestyle that captures more and more people of the society. The reasons for that are diverse and cannot be listed completely. A particular point is that Gamers are able to express themselves on video and find social support by their viewers. The same applies to the viewers who additionally find entertainment and empathy. Still it is important to find the right balance between virtual and real life.
